BREAKING: Nigerians face blackout as national grid collapses again

 

Many Nigerians have been thrown into total blackout as the national grid collapsed again.

A tweet via the official handle of Nigeria’s National Grid confirmed that the grid suffered a system failure around 11:54 am on Wednesday, September 10, 2025.

According to the post, only IbadanDisco had 20MW, while the other Discos were on 0MW

This was later confirmed by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) in a public notice to its customers.

The notice stated that significant disruptions to the power supply within their franchise areas, cutting off homes, businesses, and institutions, occurred around 11:23 am.

Please be informed that the power outage currently being experienced is due to a loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 hrs today, affecting electricity supply across our franchise areas.

“Rest assured, we are working closely with the relevant stakeholders to ensure power is restored once the grid is stabilized,” the notice read.

The collapse sparked frustration among Nigerians, who have long endured inconsistent power supply and recurring blackouts. In 2024 alone, Nigeria experienced at least 12 grid collapses.

So far, in 2025, the country has been plunged into partial darkness at least twice, although the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) insists there have been no grid collapses this year.

Meanwhile, in April 2025, Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu said Nigeria’s national grid is becoming more stable due to an additional 700 megawatts secured under the Siemens-backed Presidential Power Initiative. 

He explained that nearly 90% of the equipment under the project has been installed, including transformers and mobile substations, boosting transmission capacity.

According to Adelabu, this upgrade means the grid can now handle higher loads without collapsing, unlike before, when it became unstable once supply hit 5,000 MW. 

He noted that Nigeria has recently achieved record levels of daily power consumption and energy distribution, describing it as clear progress in the country’s electricity sector.
